Diabetes Pages

In August 1997, a workshop was held at NMSU to discuss the Human Genome Project with specific reference to Type II diabetes. The speakers at the workshop were: Paul Kraemer, Julie Meyne, and P. Scott White from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM; Rick Dorin from VA Hospital, University of New Mexico, Medical School, Albuquerque, NM; and Clay Dillingham and Susan Root from the National Center for Genome Resources, Santa Fe, NM. A representation of the information presented and discussed during that workshop is provided in the following web pages:

The Human Genome Project: a general review of the structure of the human genome and the rationale for genome mapping with regard to human diseases

Population Genetics and Diabetes: a discussion of ethnicity with examples drawn from New Mexican populations, as well as a presentation of the types of genetic data used to analyze polymorphisms in human populations

Genetics of Type II Diabetes: a brief discussion of the physiology of diabetes with an extended discussion on the efforts to identify and map genetic components for diabetes

Genetics and Public Issues - ELSI (Ethical, Legal &Social Issues): an open-ended discussion comparing past, current and future methods to collect and use genetic information on individuals
